McMillan Comments on accident at A78 / Main Street Junction, Inverkip

Commenting on the news that there was an accident this evening at the A78 / Main Street junction in Inverkip, Stuart McMillan MSP said:

"First and foremost I hope those involved in the accident are not hurt and I wish them a full and speedy recovery.

"A few months ago, constituents contacted me about the junction and their fears that the junction was an accident waiting to happen. Unfortunately, those fears have now been proven to be accurate.

"I undertook my consultation of both Inverkip and Wemyss Bay to gauge public opinion about the safety of the junction and the A78. I received a massive 41% response rate from Inverkip alone which highlighted that there is widespread concern about the junction.

"I will be contacting Transport Scotland to highlight this accident to them as further evidence that this junction is dangerous even though only last week Transport Scotland agreed to undertake a 3 month long survey about the A78 in response to my survey results.

"Also, last week, I raised this issue of this junction and the survey results in the Scottish Parliament during a debate of the West of Scotland Transport Infrastructure, as well as questioning the Transport Minister during Question Time.

"I look forward to the results of the survey and I hope this accident is fully considered in addition to the survey".

McMillan Encourages Town Centre Regeneration Bids

Stuart McMillan MSP, (SNP West of Scotland) is encouraging towns in Inverclyde to bid for their share of the £60 million Town Centre Regeneration Fund.
Applications for the scheme which aims to revitalise the country's hard pressed high streets are now open.

The fund will complement efforts already underway to support town and city centres across Scotland which are feeling the effects of the economic downturn.

Mr. McMillan said;

"The opening of applications to the Town Centre Regeneration Fund is good news for High Streets in Inverclyde as it means that they can bid for much needed funding in this tough economic climate.

"These are hard times for businesses and families across Scotland and the SNP Government in Scotland is working hard to meet these challenges and refocus activity and thus ensuring people in Inverclyde get through the economic downturn in the strongest possible position.

"This funding highlights the importance of Scotland's town centres to the economic and social fabric of the nation and the Scottish Government's commitment to the improvement of our local high streets.

"I hope people in Inverclyde take this opportunity to bid for funding for their town".

McMillan Welcomes Government Energy Saving

Stuart McMillan MSP, (SNP West of Scotland) and member of the Scottish Parliament’s Economy, Energy and Tourism Committee has today (Thursday) welcomed the announcement by the Scottish Government of a new deal with Scottish electricity companies that will see Scotland’s taxpayers save up to £10 million a year and help Scottish public bodies go greener.

Presently the Scottish public sector spends about £200 million a year on electricity but from autumn, all public bodies in Scotland including councils, health boards, universities, and college can take advantage of the contracts.

Mr McMillan said;

"This is another example of the Scottish Government working hard during the recession to protect money which could ultimately be used to create employment within Scotland.

"By saving £10 million with the bulk buying of electricity the Government can use that money to ensure further employment in Scotland occurs which increases the likelihood of turning the corner and getting out of this recession.

"The Scottish Government have been developing this innovative idea since last August, and have now delivered.

"Once again it seems like the Scottish Government have got what it takes to help Scotland prosper and fight through this difficult economic situation."

McMillan Highlights Swine Flu Advice Line

Stuart McMillan MSP, (SNP West of Scotland) has highlighted the dedicated swine flu advice line which can be accessed through NHS 24. The line will give the public valuable information about swine flu and what to do if they have any concerns.Callers to NHS 24 – 08454 24 24 24 – will now be given the additional option of being put straight through to a dedicated team who are dealing with swine flu.

Mr. McMillan said;

"Although we have had two confirmed cases in Scotland, we are not in a pandemic situation and the level of threat to public health remains low.

"It's vital that members of the public can readily access reliable and trustworthy information about swine flu. This advice line will be an easy way for people to keep abreast of the situation.

"As there are suspected, but not yet confirmed cases, in the NHS Greather Glasgow and Clyde area I would encourage people in Inverclyde to take heed of the adverts and leaflets coming their way this week on precautionary measures".

McMillan Welcomes First Marine Bill for Scotland

Stuart McMillan MSP, (SNP West of Scotland) and member of the Scottish Parliament’s Economy, Energy and Tourism Committee has commented on the first Marine Bill introduced by the Scottish Government today (Thursday).

The Bill is set to deliver more opportunities to boost the economy while improving conservation measures. It comes following calls from environmental groups, the marine industry and coastal communities for more effective, joined up management of Scotland's unique seas.

Mr. McMillan said;

"This Bill is vital for safeguarding the future of our marine industries – be it the leisure, working or environmental aspect, this Bill is exceptionally important.

"Scotland holds a quarter of Europe's total tidal and offshore wind resource and 10 per cent of its potential in wave power. Our seas generate more than £2.2 billion for the Scottish economy and there is huge potential to increase economic growth from our seas but it needs to be done in a sustainable way.

"Striking the right balance between the long-term viability and growth of our marine industries and the enhanced protection of our special marine environment is at the very heart of this Bill.

"Scotland is also a leading marine tourism destination and I am looking forward to considering the Marine Bill in some detail in my soon to be established Cross Party Group on Recreational Boating and Marine Tourism".

McMillan Welcomes HMIe Report

Stuart McMillan MSP, (SNP West of Scotland) has today welcomed the news from a report published by HM Inspectorate of Education (HMIe) that Kelly Street Children's Centre Greenock has highly-motivated, confident learners throughout the centre. The report also highlighted 'the work of the management team in developing leadership skills within the staff team.'

Mr McMillan said;

"Its excellent news to hear this report from HMIe which states that Kelly Street Children's Centre offers a high-quality curriculum.

"A great deal of credit goes to the hard work and dedication shown by all staff members in receiving such a report. This is why I have lodged a motion of congratulations in the Scottish Parliament.

"I note the inspectors have acknowledged the transitions from nursery to P1 and the approaches to developing children's skills in technology are examples of good practice at the centre."

McMillan Highlights Cost of Budget Cuts by Westminster to Inverclyde and Scotland

Stuart McMillan MSP, (SNP West of Scotland) has today (Wednesday) highlighted the Scottish Government figures that point to a threatened 9,000 job losses as a result of the real terms cut in the Scottish Budget in 2010/11 announced by the Chancellor. The £500 million cut to the Scottish budget from Westminster could cost Inverclyde up to £8.32 million in lost funding for 2010/11.

Mr McMillan said;

"I am angered and disappointed to hear of the cuts to the Scottish budget which could threaten up to 9,000 Scottish jobs and cost Inverclyde up to £8.32 million in lost funding for 2010/11.

"The Chancellor’s actions have only served to hamper the Scottish Government's actions for recovery, by slashing the money available in Scotland to invest in jobs and communities.

"It is right to tighten our belts, that’s why the Scottish Government has a 2% a year efficiency programme, with the savings reinvested in public services. But the UK plans top slice money from the Scottish Government budget.

"I urge the Westminster Government to scrap the ID card scheme and remove trident missiles from Scotland, two projects that the public do not want, which would save the taxpayer massive amounts of money and allow more investment rather than the cuts Westminster are taking to the Scottish budget."

McMillan Highlights MS Week 2009

Stuart McMillan MSP, (SNP West of Scotland) has highlighted MS Week 2009 as an opportunity for his constituents in Inverclyde to learn more about Multiple Sclerosis, a condition which affects around 10,500 Scots – more people per capita than anywhere else in the world. MS Week 2009 runs from 27th April to 3rd May 2009.

Mr. McMillan said;

"MS Week 2009 is an opportunity for constituents in Inverclyde to take time out of their day to learn more about MS, and the impact it has on the lives of so many Scots.

"With the rate of Multiple Sclerosis in Scotland higher per capita than anywhere else in the world, it is vital that we try to increase our understanding of this condition. I would encourage my constituents living in Inverclyde to take a look at the MS Society’s website, if they have not already done so, to learn more about how they can help tackle this condition.

"This year’s theme for MS Week is ‘misconceptions,’ and it will be an opportunity to look at just what people know about MS in Scotland, and how we can improve that knowledge.

"It is vitally important that conditions such as MS are widely talked about in order that we understand it fully, and that we can all contribute to improving the lives of those with Multiple Sclerosis".

McMillan Welcomes Tougher Knife Crime Sentences

Stuart McMillan MSP, (SNP West of Scotland) has welcomed today’s (Tuesday) statistics from "Criminal Proceedings in Scottish Courts, 2007-08" which show that custodial sentences for those handling offensive weapons have increased and that the average sentence they serve has also gone up to over 6 months.

Mr. McMillan said;

"This is good news and shows the commitment of the SNP Government to tackle the scourge of knife crime in Inverclyde.

"These statistics send a clear message to those who carry knives or plan to use knives to attack other people.

"That clear message is simple: you risk going straight to prison and staying there for longer than 6 months. Anyone who thinks of carrying a knife should thus think again.

"These figures let persistent knife carriers know that they face longer sentences.

"As we know knife crime is an issue of huge importance in Inverclyde and the SNP remain committed to primary prevention, where no one even thinks about carrying a knife.

"However that kind of change in attitude will take time, and until then the application of robust and longer sentences is vital".

McMillan Welcomes Rejection of Asbestos Appeal by Insurance Industry

West of Scotland SNP MSP Stuart McMillan has welcomed the rejection of the legal bid by insurance companies to prevent the Damages (Asbestos-related Conditions) (Scotland) Act 2009 coming in to force.
Axa, Norwich Union, Royal & Sun Alliance and Zurich Insurance were hoping to prevent the Act until a full-scale legal challenge could be heard in court. However, Lord Glennie yesterday (Monday) rejected the bid.
Commenting Mr. McMillan said;
"I am delighted these insurance companies are not being allowed to stand in the way of justice for asbestos related conditions sufferers.
"It was the will of the Scottish Parliament that has allowed this Act to come in to force and to attempt to overturn this was a ridiculous action to take on the part of the insurance companies.
"The insurers argued that the legislation was in breach of the European Convention on Human Rights but what about the rights of those exposed to asbestos through their employers negligence?
"Furthermore, the value of damages awarded to each pleural plaque sufferer is negligible compared to the 1.2m Euros that the Chief Executive of Axa Insurance earns and the $57.2m that the 12 members of the Group Executive of Zurich Insurance earn.
"I am pleased this legislation will come in to force in June and hope this will bring an end to the injustice suffered by many".

McMillan Comments on Scotland’s Energy Potential

Stuart McMillan MSP, (SNP West of Scotland) and member of the Scottish Parliament’s Economy, Energy and Tourism Committee has today (Monday) commented on the Scotland’s energy potential.

Speaking ahead of an announcement to be made this week by the First Minister on carbon capture Mr. McMillan says he believes Scotland has the potential, ambition and natural resource to lead the way in capturing and safely storing carbon emissions.

Mr. McMillan said;

"As part of my ongoing work with the committee I am continuously learning of Scotland’s growing potential in energy.

"Europe recognises that through our natural resources we are leading the green, clean energy revolution here in Scotland.

"Last week, the Westminster Energy Minister announced that Scottish projects will be able to bid for over £342 million of European money for renewable energy and carbon capture projects following the publication of the EU's Economic Recovery Plan.

"The importance of recognising our potential and ambition in renewable energy and carbon capture goes beyond the future of our environment. The economic benefits are vast and we must play to our strengths to reap these benefits in full, especially in a recession.

"The UK Government's announcement, last week, to establish four carbon capture demonstration projects in the UK is welcomed. Scotland is ready now to lead on one or hopefully even two of these projects. As has been said in the past the Scottish Government will continue to work with the EU and UK Government to the benefit of our economy".

McMillan Encourages Consultation Submissions to Housing Bill

Stuart McMillan MSP, (SNP West of Scotland) has today encouraged people in Inverclyde to contribute to the Scottish Government’s Housing Bill.

The current consultation seeks views on issues including ending the Right to Buy for new tenants in all social housing property and devolving and extending the pressured-area designation process, which can suspend Right to Buy in certain areas.

Mr. McMillan said;

"The Scottish Government is investing record amounts in affordable housing, more than £1.5 billion over three years, despite the tightest settlement from Westminster since devolution.

"The proposals included in this consultation mean that Councils and housing associations will be able to use the record investment to build a new generation of affordable homes without the fear that they will be lost to tenants exercising their Right to Buy.

"I know many people in Inverclyde feel strongly about the Right to Buy issue so I would encourage them to submit their views during this consultation period by emailing housingbill2009@scotland.gsi.gov.uk or writing to Tenant Priorities Team Area 1-H South Victoria Quay Edinburgh, EH6 6QQ".

McMillan Urges Inverclyde Residents to Vote

Stuart McMillan MSP, (SNP West of Scotland) has today urged people in Inverclyde to make sure they are registered to vote in the upcoming European elections.

The Election for Members of the European Parliament will take place on Thursday 4 June and Mr. McMillan is urging constituents to make their vote count.

Mr. McMillan said;

"Residents in Inverclyde have until 19 May to make sure they are registered to vote in the European elections.

"These elections are important to ensure Scotland’s voice is heard in Europe on matters of great relevancy to Inverclyde.

"If anyone has not registered yet I would urge them to find out more by visiting http://www.blogger.com/www.aboutmyvote.co.uk or my office can assist in making sure you are registered by calling 0141 889 9519".

McMillan Welcomes First Projects For New Social Enterprise Fund

Stuart McMillan MSP, (SNP West of Scotland) has welcomed the first projects to benefit from the Scottish Government’s £1 million Social Entrepreneurs Fund.

The new fund was launched to get new social enterprises off the ground, enabling them to help get people into work and keep Scotland's economy moving.

Among the first projects to benefit is Street Soccer, an initiative that will operate throughout Scotland, using local football initiatives in engaging and supporting homeless people.

Mr. McMillan said;

"This is fantastic initiative for Inverclyde to get involved in and I hope groups such as the street football initiative, co-ordinated by development officer, Stuart McCabe, try to get access to this fund.

"Social enterprises have the ability to connect with some of the most vulnerable people in society whilst helping to create valuable employment opportunities.

"That is a great ethos to be taking forward on projects such as the Street Football and I hope the success of this continues and encourages other social enterprises to apply for funding through the scheme.

"If anyone in Inverclyde has a business idea with a clear social benefit they can apply for funding through the Social Entrepreneurs Fund.

"Awards can vary from £500 to £20,000 so there is scope for many different kinds of enterprise here.

"Inverclyde has what it takes to provide people here with the opportunities they deserve through social enterprises and I hope many benefit from this fund".

McMillan Raises Transport Issues for Inverclyde In Parliament

Stuart McMillan MSP, (SNP West of Scotland) has today (Thursday) raised in the Scottish Parliament chamber transport issues which are affecting Inverclyde. Mr McMillan was speaking in the West of Scotland transport debate and also raised the question with the Minister for Transport on the A78 in General Question Time.

Mr McMillan said;

"I felt it was both necessary and important to raise transport issues, which are affecting constituents in Inverclyde, on a national level.

"This is why I was pleased to be able to highlight the Gourock to Dunoon ferry issue and the need for more trains at Wemyss Bay in the West of Scotland Transport debate.

"Alongside this, I was pleased to be able to quiz the Minister for Transport about the A78 and to ask him to accept my invitation to come to Inverkip and see for himself the dangerous and potentially life threatening A78 junction.

"I hope that the Minister will also be able to meet with or make representations to the Inverkip and Wemyss Bay Community Council regarding their concerns.

"This is an important campaign which I will continue to raise whenever I get a chance on behalf of the residents of Inverkip and Wemyss Bay."

McMillan Condemns Fuel Duty Hike

Stuart McMillan MSP (SNP, West of Scotland) has condemned the 2p per litre rise in fuel duty that was confirmed in today's (Wednesday’s) Budget.

The rise will come into effect in September and Mr. McMillan fears the move will hinder economic recovery.

Mr. McMillan said:

"Once again we see the UK Government failing the people of Inverclyde.

"Pushing up fuel prices is absolutely the wrong thing to do in the grip of recession. This increase will actually hinder economic recovery at a time when the Scottish Government is doing its utmost to try and stimulate Scotland's economy.

"This increase will hit already hard-pressed households and businesses in Inverclyde – in particular the haulage industry.

"Increases in fuel duty are not a green tax, they are a Brown one, and the people of Inverclyde have had their fill of Labour’s fuel duty increases.

"I am pleased my SNP colleagues at Westminster will be revisiting the proposals for a fuel duty regulator – a workable proposal to stabilise fuel prices which attracted much support from the haulage industry".

McMillan Says Pleural Plaques Compensation Must Stand

"INSURERS ACTIONS "DESPICABLE"

West of Scotland MSP and supporter of Clydeside Action on Asbestos Stuart McMillan has condemned the actions of insurance companies currently undertaking a judicial review over the Scottish Parliament's decision to support those affected by pleural plaques through the Damages (Asbestos-related conditions) (Scotland) Act.

The Act ensures that an earlier House of Lords decision which could have prevented sufferers claiming compensation is not applicable in Scotland.

Stuart McMillan, who has supported the campaigners behind this bill, today submitted a Parliamentary motion condemning the insurers determination to overturn the democratic decision of the Scottish Parliament.

Mr McMillan said; "The insurers actions are despicable and seek to deprive those who have plueral plaques of the valuable compensation they are entitled to.

"Those who have plueral plaques are innocent victims of the damaging impact of asbestos and should not be punished for it.

"The Scottish Parliament took the democratic decision to pass this legislation and to ensure sufferers have access to compensation. It is not for insurance companies to challenge that simply because it might affect their economic interests. In Scotland we have what it takes to ensure those who should be compensated for their injuries receive that compensation not to deprive people of legitimate compensation.

"As with every other organisation the insurers made their case to Parliament - it was rejected and they should accept that democratic decision rather than crying to the courts.

"This is a disgraceful attempt to restrict access to legitimate compensation."

McMillan Says Cuts Will Be Deeply Damaging For Scotland

Stuart McMillan MSP (SNP, West of Scotland) has responded to today's Budget which contains damaging cuts to the Scottish budget in 2010 - 2011 and could cost thousands of Scottish jobs with dire consequences for businesses and ordinary working families.

Mr. McMillan was responding to the Chancellor's UK budget announcement which identified £500 million of cuts next year for Scotland. The announcement comes on the day new GDP statistics show that Scotland is officially in recession.

Mr. McMillan said:

"This budget is deeply damaging for Scotland. Once again the UK Government has ignored the needs of Scotland.

"The Chancellor today said that you cannot cut your way out of recession and that taking money out of the economy at this critical time would damage key public services. Yet that is precisely what he is imposing on Scotland.

"A £500 million cut to the Scottish budget will impact greatly on the services people need as Scotland moves officially into recession.

"Whilst there are measures that are welcome, for example the Chancellor has listened to the Scottish Governments calls for greater support for savers and pensioners, the fiscal stimulus we desperately need is conspicuous by its absence.

"It is true that Government does have to tighten its belt, just as householders and businesses are doing right across Inverclyde.

"These cuts could see approximately 9,000 people losing their jobs and the effects will be felt across key sectors of the Scottish economy and has potential to impact heavily on Inverclyde.

"It is clear the SNP Government is doing its utmost to protect jobs, skills, business and Scottish families through this downturn and will continue to do so, but this is a damaging budget which severely threatens all the progress being made by the Scottish Government to nurture a strong economic recovery for Scotland".

McMillan Welcomes Review of A78 Inverkip

Stuart McMillan MSP, (SNP West of Scotland) has today welcomed the news from Transport Scotland that they have asked Amey, who
manage and maintain the A78 trunk road, to carry out a three month review at Inverkip including the south, north and Marina junctions.
This follows on from recent pressure Mr. McMillan has placed for action to be taken on the A78 to improve road safety.

Mr. McMillan is to raise the issue in the Scottish Parliament chamber and has used the results of consultations he has conducted in the
villages of Inverkip and Wemyss Bay to highlight constituents concerns.

Mr McMillan said;

"I am delighted to have been informed by Transport Scotland that they have instructed Amey to carry out a review at Inverkip which will include looking at the south, north and marina junctions.

"I have been inundated with constituent responses to my consultations from residents in both Inverkip and Wemyss Bay village stating that they wish urgent action to be taken to improve road safety on the A78.

"I hope this three month review will take into consideration the results of my consultation, which highlight many constituents concerns, and that Amey and Transport Scotland act to improve the safety at the south, north and marina junctions.

"This is a massive step forward in the campaign to get action on the A78 trunk road. I now hope that the authorities will take the necessary steps to improve the road safety on the A78."

McMillan Delighted With 600 Extra Hospital Cleaners

Stuart McMillan MSP, (SNP West of Scotland) is delighted with the funding announced for extra hospital cleaners.

The recruitment of 600 extra cleaners is due to over £5 million of extra investment by the Scottish Government.

Mr. McMillan said;

"It is great news that NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde will potentially gain 141 extra cleaners from this announcement.

"The Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing announced last year that there would be no further privatisation of hospital cleaning and catering services anywhere in Scotland and this funding further shows the SNP Government’s commitment to tackling superbugs.

"This measure goes towards ensuring all Scottish health boards meet the highest possible cleaning standards, as part of the government's drive to tackle hospital infections.

"Not only that but by recruiting 600 extra cleaner overall it will provide badly needed jobs helping to sustain the Scottish economy during this tough time".

McMillan Slams Team GB Proposals

Stuart McMillan MSP, (SNP West of Scotland) has reiterated his anger and frustration at the Westminster Governments attempt to impose a Great Britain football team at the 2012 Olympics. Speaking to delegates at the SNP Conference Mr McMillan highlighted the 'earth scorching policies' being adopted at Westminster which could create a Team GB, against the will the majority of the Scottish people.

Mr McMillan said;

"I am disappointed and frustrated that the Labour Government is continuing to pursue the Team GB idea, against the will of the majority of Scottish people.

"The Prime Minister must stop his modern day earth scorching policy of assisting with the removal of Scottish organisations and listen to the people for once.

"I am pleased to see the SFA have stood firm in their disagreement with Team GB, even in the face of constant pressure and hope this continues."

McMillan Welcomes European Funding Boost to West of Scotland

Stuart McMillan MSP, (SNP West of Scotland) has welcomed the First Minister’s announcement for a West of Scotland Loan Fund to be created using the European Social Fund.

The fund will provide loans of up to £50,000 to new and growing businesses and will invest in businesses that have failed to receive financial support from the private sector, including banks.

Mr. McMillan said;

"The Scottish Government is doing everything to ensure a strong economic recovery and this cash injection supports the Government’s six point recovery plan.

"The funding will focus on projects which provide Scotland’s workforce with the mechanisms they need to sustain themselves during this economic downturn.

"The European funding will also concentrate on projects that will see increased opportunities and investment in some of the country’s most deprived areas.

"I’m pleased the west of Scotland has been allocated this funding and look forward to seeing the local economy and communities here benefiting from it".

McMillan Welcomes Royal Assent for Damages Act

Stuart McMillan MSP, (SNP West of Scotland) has welcomed the news hat Royal Assent was given to the Damages (Asbestos-related Conditions) (Scotland) Act 2009 on 17 April.

In a letter from the Cabinet Secretary for Justice acknowledging Mr. McMillan’s ‘valuable support’ he was informed the legislation has now become part of the statute book.

Mr. McMillan said;

"I am delighted this Act is now official legislation and look forward to the Scottish Government Ministers making a Commencement Order to bring the provisions of the Act fully into force in the near future.

"With the SNP Government in Scotland leading the way with this legislation I am pleased to note the Prime Minister has said a decision from the UK Government will be made on pleural plaques after Easter recess.

"Following the previous absurd House of Lords ruling I am pleased the Prime Minister thinks it is right to look at the issue again in relation to sufferers south of the border.

"I am sure the campaigning done in Scotland on the issue to get to this stage here has prompted this decision and I hope any statement from Westminster is favourable for those who have campaigned relentlessly".

McMillan Urges Chief Exec to Meet with League of Friends

Stuart McMillan MSP (SNP, West of Scotland) has today written to the Chief Executive of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, Robert Calderwood to urge him to meet with representatives of the League of Friends at the tea bar in the Inverclyde Royal Hospital (IRH). The letter comes on the back of a recent meeting Mr McMillan had with representatives of the League of Friends at the IRH where they showed Mr McMillan the first class service they provide.

Mr McMillan said;

"I was pleased to have the opportunity to meet with representatives of the League of Friends at their tea bar in the Inverclyde Royal Hospital.

"The service they provide is first class and it would be very disappointing to see it removed in place of an aroma café. This is why I have written to the Chief Executive of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde to urge that he meet with the League of Friends and witness first hand the excellent service they provide in the hospital.

"I have also added my signature to the petition which is being run in conjunction with the Greenock Telegraph and was delighted to see that there are over 1,000 signatures calling on the NHS board to reverse their decision to axe the Hospital League of Friends tea bar at Inverclyde Royal Hospital.

"I hope that the Health Board listen to this outpour of anger against closing the tea bar."

McMillan to Meet With Representatives in T-Mobile Jobs Issue

Stuart McMillan MSP, (SNP West of Scotland) has arranged a meeting with representatives of Telecom Service Centres Ltd (TSC) and is looking to arrange a meeting with T-Mobile to discuss the proposed loss of some 118 call centre jobs at the T-Mobile centre in Greenock. Mr McMillan has also written to the Minister for Enterprise to highlight the job losses and to ensure the Scottish Government will be making all possible support available to the workforce.

Mr McMillan said;

"I was extremely disappointed to hear of the recent news that 118 call centre jobs at the T-Mobile centre in Greenock could be lost.

"Since I made my feelings known about the proposed job losses I have been contacted by constituents who are also concerned about the loss of jobs and the potential affect on the local economy with the news that jobs could be moved to the Philippines.

"This is why I have sought meetings with both TSC and T-Mobile to find out more detail about the possible loss of jobs in Greenock".

McMillan Receives Backing of MEP In Inverclyde Flooding Campaign

Stuart McMillan MSP, (SNP West of Scotland) has welcomed the backing of Member of the European Parliament Alyn Smith who recently visited Inverclyde on a day of action. During the visit Mr McMillan was able to take Mr Smith MEP to the Cartsdyke Station area next to Greenock Morton's stadium and to Drumfrocher Road where he was shown where the floods devastated Inverclyde last December 2008.

Mr McMillan said;

"I was delighted that Alyn Smith MEP was able to come down to Inverclyde and see first hand the areas which were devastated by flooding last December.

"Real action is needed to prevent the problems of last December from occurring again and this is why I had meeting with SEPA and Scottish Water to highlight the problems. I have also received an assurance from the Minister for Environment that she will visit Inverclyde in the near future to see the problem areas.

"I hope that a visit by the Minister will make the relevant authorities take action and address the flooding issues of Inverclyde."

Mr Smith said;

"Months have now passed since this area was hit by flooding and you can still see the damage in some parts.

"It is vital that changes are made soon if we are to avoid similar devastation in the future and so Stuart has my full support in his efforts to get this sorted. I will do everything in my power to assist him with his campaign."

Clydeside Volunteers are Priceless says local MSP

This Thursday, April 16th, West of Scotland MSP Stuart McMillan will roll up his sleeves and pitch in to help serve refreshments to patients, visitors and staff at the WRVS tea bar in the Inverclyde Royal Hospital (IRH) run by volunteers who have gifted over £70,000 back to the hospital since 2006.

Around 45 volunteers share the task of providing an oasis of calm and sympathy to all comers but the volunteers themselves benefit massively as well. Patricia Kennedy, who has been volunteering for WRVS at IRH for over 10 years, said:

"I have been in and out of the Royal several times as a patient and I was always treated with great kindness. I wanted to give something back to my hospital and the WRVS helped me do that. I’m by myself now but I have met lots of different people and many new friends through WRVS. WRVS was a lifesaver; I’d be lost without my volunteering."

Mr McMillan added:

"I’m delighted to be spending some time helping volunteers at the WRVS tea bar in Inverclyde Royal Hospital. It’s a great opportunity for me, as an MSP, to get out there and speak to patients, visitors and staff while offering a valuable service and supporting a good cause."

WRVS Project Manager at the IRH, Wilma Mooney, said,

"Volunteers are WRVS. People like Patricia are what make us special and volunteering itself isjust so good for people’s well-being. It is obvious Mr McMillan understands that and we’re so grateful for his support. Not many people would be willing to get their hands dirty like this! We’d recommend volunteering to anyone and we’re always ready to welcome new volunteers."

McMillan Concerned About T-Mobile Job Losses

Stuart McMillan MSP, (SNP West of Scotland) has today made his concerns known about the reported loss of 118 call centre jobs at T-Mobile in Greenock. Mr McMillan has written to the Minister for Enterprise to highlight the job losses and to ascertain what the Scottish Government is doing to minimise such losses in Greenock's workforce.

Mr McMillan said;

"I am extremely disappointed to hear the news that T-Mobile is to shed over 500 jobs and that 118 of these jobs will be call centre posts in Greenock.

"The T-Mobile centre in Greenock has been a good source of employment for the local community and to see these jobs losses is very disheartening especially as it seems they are being moved to the Philippines.

"Therefore, I felt it was important and necessary to write to the Minister for Enterprise highlighting the job losses and to ask what the Scottish Government is doing to minimise and prevent further losses."

McMillan Encouraged by Fall in C.Diff Rates

Stuart McMillan MSP, (SNP West of Scotland) has commented on the fall in the latest rates for Clostridium difficile while welcoming confirmation of MRSA screening to be rolled out across the country.

Mr. McMillan said;

"C.diff cases have fallen by nearly 20% across Scotland which is encouraging.

"The commitment of the SNP Government to tackle hospital superbugs has meant working tirelessly to crack down on these infections which cause misery and worry for patients and their families.

"I am pleased the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing announced the Scottish Government will roll out a national MRSA screening programme over 2009/2010. Screening reduces the number of people admitted to hospital with MRSA, minimising the risk of infections spreading between patients.

"These actions show the Scottish Government is putting a great deal of emphasis on working towards a healthier Scotland".

MSP AND MEP TEAM VISIT INVERCLYDE

Teamwork was the order of the day in Inverclyde earlier this week (6 April) as SNP MSP Stuart McMillan and SNP MEP Alyn Smith took to the streets. Mr McMillan and Mr Smith visited areas that were affected by flooding, as well as meeting with the Inverclyde Community Development Trust and local SNP councillors.

Mr Smith stressed the importance of teamwork between all levels of government in order to achieve the best possible results for Scotland.

Smith said:

"As ever it has been a busy day out with the team in Inverclyde. It has been great to be out and about; seeing the goings on in the area.

"The SNP is well used to working as a team across all council chambers and parliaments, and of course as Scotland's government we have been able to really start delivering on the priorities of the people. The team in Inverclyde provides a first-class example of how all layers of government should work together to get the best results for the community.

"I was pleased to see the Inverclyde Community Development Trust first hand; it is exactly the kind of dynamic scheme that communities all over Scotland should be striving for. Part-funded by the European Union, it is up to me to highlight to Scotland’s local councils that such opportunities are open to them over the water if they choose to look for them. I'll come and see any project any SNP councillor wants me to and it is my job to turn up funding in Brussels."

Mr McMillan added:

"I was delighted to welcome Alyn back to Inverclyde to learn about the excellent work that the Inverclyde Community Development Trust is undertaking.

"As an MEP Alyn covers the whole of Scotland so it was great to have the opportunity to highlight the good work being done in Inverclyde and to demonstrate the potential for further development."

McMillan Welcomes Review of Free- to-Air Sporting Events

Stuart McMillan MSP, (SNP West of Scotland) has welcomed the announcement of a review of the list of events which are protected for free broadcast coverage.The Broadcasting Act 1996 allows the Secretary of State to draw up a list of sporting and other events of national importance reserved for broadcast by public service broadcasters with the aim of giving them the widest possible broadcast coverage. The list was last revised in 1998 and is now under review by a panel of sport, broadcast and business experts.
The panel has also invited the general public to submit their views.

Mr. McMillan said;

"Calling for the revision of this list has been a long running SNP campaign so this consultation is warmly welcomed.

"I wrote to the Secretary of State at the end of last year and his response stated Scottish national football games would be considered for listing within this review.

"Whether it is football, rugby or any other sport I would urge fans to make their views known to the consultation on which events should be aired on free channels.

"This review must listen to the voices of Scotland fans who, for example, want to watch our national team qualifying matches with their friends or family in the comfort of their own homes.

"I encourage all sports fans in Inverclyde to make their opinions known to the panel. I will certainly be making my views known".

McMillan Welcomes Scottish Governments Business Rates Reduction

Stuart McMillan MSP, (SNP West of Scotland) has welcomed the second phase of the Scottish Governments reduction of business rates which came into effect on the 1st of April. Across Scotland 120,000 small businesses will now be eligible to have their business rates abolished with a further 30,000 seeing their rates dramatically reduced. In these difficult economic times such a move will help small businesses protect much needed jobs. Mr McMillan met with local businessman Peter Fletcher of Add-a-print, Greenock, to discuss how the abolition of business rates would help his business.

Mr McMillan said;

"I am pleased to see the Scottish Government is continuing its commitment to help small businesses during these difficult economic times.

"From the 1st April, 120,000 businesses will see their business rates abolished completely – saving some businesses over £3000 a year. This is a vital step and could be instrumental in protecting jobs and supporting Inverclyde's businesses through the difficult year ahead.

"Small businesses such as Add-a-print in Greenock will be thankful of the Scottish Government's support which they will receive through the abolition of business rates. This could help save local businesses and keep the economy moving forward in Inverclyde."

McMillan Highlights Help for Businesses

Stuart McMillan MSP, (SNP West of Scotland) and member of the Scottish Parliament Economy, Energy and Tourism Committee has welcomed the opportunity for businesses to spread this year's annual increase in business rates over three years to help their cash flow and provide a much-needed boost for the Scottish economy.

The measure is designed to limit the impact of the annual rates increase and will ensure Scottish businesses continue to benefit from more generous rates relief than their counterparts in England.

Businesses can choose, if they want, to spread part of the increase over a longer period. The breathing space that gives them will free up some much needed cash this year to help meet the pressures of the current economic downturn.

Mr. McMillan said;

"The Scottish Government is already delivering vital help for small businesses in Inverclyde in the form of the small business bonus scheme.

"That scheme will save the average small business around £1,400 on their rates this year. Many thousands of small businesses will pay nothing at all.

"For those businesses that still have to pay rates, this opportunity offers them vital breathing space in these tough economic times.

"Spreading the cost will improve cash flows this year and so help businesses through the current economic challenges so that they can be better placed to take advantage of the upturn when conditions begin to improve.

"It demonstrates the SNP Government’s continued commitment to do all in their power to helping businesses and households in Inverclyde through the downturn".

McMillan Welcomes Fund to Help NHS Staff

Stuart McMillan MSP, (SNP West of Scotland) has welcomed a new fund set up to help support the wellbeing of NHS employees and provide initiatives to combat violence against staff.

The £1.5 million ring-fenced Working Well Challenge Fund - of which £0.5 million is specifically set aside for work to address and reduce aggression and violence against healthcare staff - is open to all NHS Boards who wish to apply for additional funds to undertake new work to promote and enhance the wellbeing of their staff.

Mr. McMillan said;

"NHS staff work incredibly hard and deserve as much support as the next person.

"This new Challenge Fund aims to support the initiatives and ideas which health boards wish to implement in order to improve the wellbeing of their staff.

"The findings of the latest NHS Scotland Staff Survey published in January 2009 showed that 18% of the respondees had experienced a violent incident in the last 12 months. While that is 10% fewer respondees than the last survey undertaken in 2006 the message should be clear that violence against any healthcare worker is unacceptable and will not go unpunished.

"The commitment of this fund re-enforces the message that violence against any healthcare worker is unacceptable, and builds on the enhanced protection provided by the extended legislation introduced by the Scottish Government last April".

McMillan Welcomes Town Centre Regeneration

Stuart McMillan MSP, (SNP West of Scotland) has welcomed the release of more details on how the Town Centre Regeneration Fund approved as part of the budget process will operate.

The £60 million scheme will be open to a range of bodies including local authorities, Community Planning Partnerships, Business Improvement Districts, Town Centre Managers, local Chambers of Commerce, businesses and third sector groups.

Mr. McMillan said;

"I have recently written to the Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Sustainable Growth to encourage the regeneration of town centres in Inverclyde.

"This is an issue I know many people in Inverclyde care about and I am keen to see our town centres, which are the heart of our community, survive the current economic climate.

"The SNP Government has pledged to take action for our town centres and the introduction of the £60 million regeneration fund is a welcomed example of the Government taking decisive action.

"Investing money in the town centres of Inverclyde is crucial and I hope to see several successful bids from the area for this funding".

McMillan Calls on Westminster to Legislate on Asbestos Conditions

Stuart McMillan MSP, (SNP West of Scotland) has written to the Prime Minister Gordon Brown MP to urge the Westminster Government to follow the lead of the Scottish Parliament and pass a Bill which will legislate and compensate sufferers of asbestos related conditions.

Mr McMillan said;

"I was delighted the Damages (Asbestos-related Conditions) (Scotland) Bill passed into legislation by the Scottish Parliament with support of all the parties except the Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.

"This is an important piece of legislation which will help many families who have been affected by asbestos related conditions receive justice.

"I have written to the Prime Minister to urge the Westminster Government to follow the example of the Scottish Parliament and introduce a Bill to provide justice for sufferers of asbestos related conditions in the UK."

Harry McCluskey, secretary of Clydeside Action on Asbestos stated;

"The Scottish Parliament is to be congratulated as it has recognised that those diagnosed with Pleural Plaques deserve to pursue compensation given that their condition was caused by the negligence of other’s.

"Clydeside Action on Asbestos firmly believes that it is shameful for Westminster not to legislate in favour of all those with Pleural Plaque’s in England and Wales. The men and women who contracted Pleural Plaque’s did so by going out to work everyday in order to feed their families.
Clydeside Action on Asbestos must commend the efforts of the SNP politicians, in particular Stuart McMillan; Bill Kidd and Gil Paterson for all their efforts on behalf of those diagnosed with an Asbestos Related Disease."
