Stuart McMillan MSP, (SNP West of Scotland) has today (Wednesday) welcomed the Scottish Government’s announcement that Scottish university students taking part in overseas exchange programmes are to receive full tuition fee support from next year.
Mr McMillan said;
"In these troubled economic times this is excellent news for students. These exchange programmes help create a self-confident, outward looking Scotland and by offering this financial help Scottish students can continue to reap the benefits.
"It's important that we continue to see an increase in the skills our people need in-order for Scotland to emerge strongly from the current economic problems and this announcement will help do that.
"Today's announcement is another addition to the Scottish Government's list of initiatives it has announced in the past six months to encourage and support international exchange programmes including funding for overseas work experience, support for the NUS to encourage students to take the benefits available from spending time overseas, and the expansion of the Fulbright scheme to build links with the US.
"I was delighted to have the opportunity to spend time studying abroad in France, Germany and Sweden, and I hope more Scottish students will also have the opportunity to see new cultures and develop new skills.
"Together we all have what it takes to get through this recession and this initiative is another element in helping Scottish students develop their skills and broaden their horizons."
